Admiral David Farragut-Biography
David Farragut was born on July 5, 1801 near Campbell Station, Tennessee. Was the son of George
Farragut, a Spanish merchant captain born on the island Minorca, Spain. His mother was from North
Carolina but her parents were from Ireland. His father joined the American Revolution War just after arriving
to America in 1766. His father served both on land and at sea for the Americans. After his mother died, his
family moved to Louisiana. It was there that Commodore David Porter offered to "adopt" David and take him
as a midshipman on his cruises. That means that Farragut joined the navy at around age nine. His first
adventure was on the USS Essex, when he participated in the capture of the HMS Alert. Becoming a prize
master at age 12, it was obvious that David Porter had high hopes for David Farragut. After serving in the
war of 1812. At the time of the civil war outbreak, David Farragut made it clear who he was siding with,
living in Norfolk, Virginia. He was forced to move to a small town outside New York City. He was assigned to
the Western Gulf Blockade Squadron
